600 Government workers and volunteers join the Arbor Day in Nasipit, ADN


BUTUAN CITY, JUNE 25—Government employees, uniformed personnel and private sectors in Caraga Region have joined the nation in the celebration of Arbor Day with more than 600 volunteers trooped to a mountain village to plant tree seedlings mostly of narra and acacia mangium species.

DE-NR 13 Regional Executive Director Atty Felix S. Alicer said the yearly event which is usually held in June is considered one of the significant activities in the environment month since the people are given a wide-range of opportunities to express their love and appreciation for nature through planting tree seedlings.

"We all have great responsibilities to care for the nature by replenishing the resources that we have destroyed in the past as a result of active logging activities " RED Alicer said during a program prior to the planting. "Let us give that happiness to our children and their children to enjoy clean air and rivers," he added.

It was also noted that other personnel of PENRO and CENROs in Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte and the Dinagat province have conducted likewise their respective celebration by planting tree seedlings.

In Nasipit, Agusan del Norte, volunteers and participants have trooped to the site after a brief kilometer hike upward to plant the tree seedlings on a 1.6 hectare open production forest. RED Alicer, with Assistant Regional Director Ben Ali B. Decampong, PENRO Rosendo A. Asunto and CENRO Alejandra B. Boiser, planted narra seedling species. The uniformed men from the Philippine National Police, and the Philippine Army were the most number of volunteers that joined the planting rite.

The other participants were representatives from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE); PNP RMFB 13; 23rd Army Infantry Batallion, 2Bde, 41D PA; 942nd Company Philippine Navy; I-GU Nasipit; I-GU Carmen; PI-GU Agusan del Norte; Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Sorority; BLGU Amontay, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte; PO AWAMPCO; PO ARFAMCO; PO CRMPC and NALFUMA.

Presidential Proclamation 643 amending proclamation 396, declares June 25 as Philippine Arbor Day and enjoining the active participation of all government agencies, including government-owned and controlled corporations, private sector, schools, civil society groups and the citizenry in tree planting activity.

Trees sequester carbon dioxide (C02) which is one of the contributors in Global Warming and the excess of it causes Climate Change.

DENR RED Alicer has encouraged everyone to plant trees to fight climate change.
