PH’S WHALE SHARK CONSERVATION EFFORTS LAUDED Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary and chief of staff Rodolfo Garcia receives, in behalf of DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, an award from Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Executive Secretary Bradnee Chambers recognizing the efforts of the Philippine government in conserving the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), locally known as butanding. In accepting the award during the Migratory Species Champions Night held October 22 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Garcia stressed that the whale shark has become an important component of the growing wildlife tourism industry  in the country. The Philippines, through the DENR, is hosting the Convention’s 12th Session of Conference of the Parties from 23-28 October 2017 at the PICC. ###
